Utilising sub-domains to expand content sites

Hi There, I am looking for some thoughts and advice regarding utilising sub-domains. For example if I had the domain www.google.com and I then setup directory.google.com is this a valid proposition worth looking into ? I was thinking of running several blog style niche sites ( not clones )… internet marketing for real estate investors
